The athletics club then approached Tipperary Town Council and the idea to have a fully functioning sports and leisure centre came to fruition.<\/p><p>The centre was officially opened in 1987 by former minister of education Mary O&#8217;Rourke, the centre is dedicated to the memory of local priest Canon John Hayes.
